Wax On, Wax Off (Was The Wax Really There In The First
Wax On, Wax Off (Was the Wax Really There in the First Place) Descartes was one who would not resign to a perplexing theory or take a flawed proof as an answer. The meditations he had in his time are still talked about today. Descartes meditations lead to a plethora of thought provoking questions that are still discussed today. One meditation especially showcases these thought provoking questions due to Descartes impeccable use of an illustration, the mediation of the ball of wax. The ball of wax meditation is undoubtedly a groundbreaking meditation but it is not the first. Before the ball of wax meditation can be discussed the first meditation must be taken into consideration. In Descartesââ¬â¢ first meditation he does something that hadâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦To start with he examines the ball of wax and lists what he knows about it through his senses. That being its taste, smell, color, shape and so on. The normal things that are observed using the senses. Then Descartes changes the setting to one near a fire totally changing the w ax. What once had one sets of physical characteristics taken in through the senses now has another. After seeing that the ball of wax had changed so much he wants to list what he can say for certainty is true. Descartes says that he knows the wax is ââ¬Å"extended, flexible, and changeable thingâ⬠(Descartes p.161). He realizes that the information he gained did not come through his senses. His senses had led him astray leaving him to believe that this information either came from his imagination or his mind. However, Descartes also decides that he could not have imagined that the wax would had these characteristics or imagine the innumerous forms the wax could take. That just leaves one possible solution according to Descartes. He assumes that he knows these characteristics from intellect alone. His senses and imagination left him confused but by applying knowledge his thoughts were cleared up. By his use of knowledge, he was able to determine the what the wax really was. An object might be described by the senses but that description is not what an object is. That descripti on is merely some characteristics in the objects current state but they do not define the object. The essence of an object,Show MoreRelatedRene Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy1234 Words à |à 5 Pages In Rene Descartes, Meditations on First Philosophy, Descartes does and experiment with wax to try to prove that things actually exist in this world. Looking Inside The Hollow Men Essay Example For Students
Looking Inside The Hollow Men Essay A Look Inside ââ¬Å"The Hollow Menâ⬠Eliot, a master of the written craft, carefully thought out each aspect of his 1925 poem ââ¬Å"The Hollow Men.â⬠Many differences in interpretation exist for Eliotââ¬â¢s complex poetry. One issue never debated is the extensive range of things to consider in his TS Eliotââ¬â¢s writing. Because TS Eliot often intertwined his writing by having one piece relate to another ââ¬Å"The Hollow Menâ⬠is sometimes considered a mere appendage to The Waste Land. ââ¬Å"The Hollow Men,â⬠however, proves to have many offerings for a reader in and among itself. The epigraph contains two pertinent references (http). First, ââ¬Å"Mistah Kurtz ââ¬â he deadâ⬠is an allusion to Conradââ¬â¢s Heart of Darkness. In his novella, Conrad portrays the empty nature of men. Mistah Kurtz is a character that lacks a soul, thus, a true ââ¬Å"Hollow Man.â⬠In the second quotation the epigraph alludes to Englandââ¬â¢s November 5 tradition of Guy Fawkes Day. In 1605, Guy Fawkes unsuccessfully tried to blow up the parliament building. Eliotââ¬â¢s quote ââ¬Å"A penny for the old guyâ⬠is called out by children on this holiday who are attempting to buy fireworks in order to blow up straw figures of Fawkes. Within the first stanza Eliot establishes the speaker, setting, theme and begins a rhythmic pattern that will hold true for four of the five sections of the poem. The speaker in the poem is not human, or at least prefers to be thought of as a scarecrow over a ââ¬Å"â⬠¦lost / Violent soulâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (lines 15-16). The powerful comparison between the worthlessness of ââ¬Å"ratsââ¬â¢ feet over broken glassâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (line 9) to their ââ¬Å"dry voicesâ⬠(line 5) illustrates how meaningless they (the Hollow Men) truly are. Two lines detached from the first stanza contain a series of paradoxes which further the idea of meaninglessness, ââ¬Å"Shape without form, shade without color, / Paralyzed force, gesture without motionâ⬠(11-12). Although difficult to discern exactly what is going on and where in the poem, the reader easily perceives the overall feeling of the hopelessness in just the opening lines, ââ¬Å"We are the hollow men / We are the stuffed menâ⬠(lines 1-2) establish a grim feeling of emptiness. Images like ââ¬Å"This is the dead land / This is cactus landâ⬠¦Under the twinkle of a fading starâ⬠(lines 39-44) create a bleak, dry, desert land setting. The theme of the poem parallels those of Conradââ¬â¢s Heart of Darkness (Smith). The degradation of ritual (religious or otherwise) and the emptiness or reduction of human to childish behavior is parallel concepts in both pieces. Part I of the poem describes the insignificance of the ââ¬Å"hollow men.â⬠Part I gives the vague setting and shows the request of the hollow men to be viewed as empty; ââ¬Å"Remember usâ⬠¦not as lost / Violent souls which Kurtz and Fawkes both were, but only / As the hollow menâ⬠(lines 15-18). It also introduces two motifs, that of eyes and kingdom. ââ¬Å"Those who have crossed / With direct eyes, to deathââ¬â¢s other Kingdomâ⬠(line 13-14) is an allusion to Danteââ¬â¢s Paradiso (Bowler). Kingdom with a capita lized K may refer to Heaven (although all references to a ââ¬Å"kingdomâ⬠do not), and those with ââ¬Å"direct eyesâ⬠are allowed to go there and become blessed. ââ¬Å"Eyesâ⬠in the poem refer to those of Charon in Danteââ¬â¢s Inferno (Williamson, 157). With the line, ââ¬Å"Eyes I dare not meet in dreamsâ⬠(line 19) the speaker states that the ââ¬Å"eyesâ⬠are a source of fear. Playing a connective role in the poem, the first two lines in the first four sections have a specific rhythm. Section Iââ¬â¢s, ââ¬Å"We are the hollow men / We are the stuffed menâ⬠(lines 1-2) is like IIââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Eyes I dare not meet in dreams / In deathââ¬â¢s dream kingdomâ⬠(19-20), Part IIIââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"This is the dead land / This is the cactus landâ⬠(39-40) and IVââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The eyes are not here / There are no eyes here.â⬠This language serves as a rhythmic refrain tying each section together while setting off the last. The use of literary devices in ââ¬Å"The Hollow Menâ⬠is seemingly endless. Rhyme also plays and important role. In I, like all of the other parts (except the fifth) the final line of
